District 105SC Convention 2021
We stayed home, we stayed safe and
still enjoyed playing our part to the full
The District 105SC Convention this year was an event like no other. While we were unable to meet up in person, Lions throughout the district and across the world were able to gather together, discuss Lions topics and socialise without leaving the comfort of their homes.
The wonders of the internet brought together over 70 Lions on the Friday evening, many with their partners for the themed 'Staycation' Host Night. Many of us dressing up in holiday attire for an evening. Lively and enjoyable music came from 'Us Two' a group comprising of Zone Chair Angie Fawcett from Westbury Lions together with her husband Rob. A race night event was also staged where guests were able to back their favourite horses in a series of races using the voting system used the following day at Convention. Host Night guests were then able to mingle using Zoom breakout rooms to catch up with friends until about 10.00pm.
On Saturday over 160 attendees logged in at 9:30am and there were still over 140 attendees as we sang We'll Meet Again at the close of Convention just after 3pm
On Convention Day District Governor Steve Petty welcomed over 160 attendees from across the district and guests from as far afield as the West Indies, Canada and Ireland. At the start of Convention DG Steve read the poem Passing On written by the late PDG Ken Staniforth as we remembered 21 fellow Lions who have passed to higher service in the last year. All Resolutions and District Officer Reports were voted on and accepted using the secure remote voting system on the District Website. For full details the nominations and resolutions click here.
The election of the 2021-22 District Governor and 1st Vice District Governor was completed with Brian Donavon from Abingdon Lions Club being elected as the next District Governor and Dave Ebsworth from Reading Lions elected as 1st Vice District Governor.
No nominations were received for the position of 2nd Vice District Governor so filling this
appointment has been referred back to Cabinet.
Past International Director Sandro Castellana joined us from Abano Terme Euganee Lions Club near Venice to speak about LCIF aims and projects.
An inspiring presentation was given by District 105SC's Young Ambassador - Kenan Bryan detailing his community work on the Island of Jersey.
Reports were received from 'ROAR', the motivating competition for Primary School pupils, Feed the Hungry from 1st VDG elect Lion Chris Hibbert - District 105CE, LCIF, DG Steve Petty's Charity 'Hope for Tomorrow' plus the 'Brain Tumour Research' from MD Officer Fran Stary and the Lions collaboration with 'Young Farmers' from PDG Jarvis Macdonald.
We heard about inspirational club and zone projects: Zone 2E - IT Refurbishment Project, Hayling Island Lions - Supporting the Community, Reading Lions - Food Donation Heroes, Swanwick Lions - Warsash Community Support, D'Abadie Lions Club of Trinidad & Tobago with Gillingham, Mere & Shaftesbury Lions - International Collaboration using Video Calls, Online Quiz Night fundraising from Wokingham Lions and Petersfield Lions - Ten Performing Lions.
Towards the end of Convention presentations were given about District 105SC's new Marketing Team, the Incoming Officers Training Day, the forthcoming MD Convention on 1st May 2021 and District 105SC's 2022 Convention.
The Training Day and Handover are planned for 10th July at Swindon - more information will be announced soon.
At the end of Convention Day there were still over 140 attendees as we sang We'll Meet Again at the close just after 3pm.
All in all everyone really enjoyed this Convention with remarks such "Fantastic" coming from Lion Joanne Ferguson in the West Indies. Despite technical challenges with computers and the internet everything went very smoothly and the Convention Committee and Technical Team deserve a BIG vote of thanks for making this a safe and enjoyable event. Lions throughout District 105SC and overseas were able to fully participate.
